What is the Creative Connection Club?

The NDFT Creative Connection Club is a programme designed to complement our regular social meetups and coffee mornings, offering a dedicated space for Neurodivergent adults to explore a range of creative activities shaped by community interest. Each month, sessions are facilitated by professional artists and practitioners, with a focus on creativity, connection, and environmental sustainability.

Painting with Nature, Workshop Details

Painting with Nature is a hands-on, playful art workshop for Neurodivergent adults who want to explore creativity using everyday, sustainable materials.

In this session, you’ll learn how to make simple, water-based paints using things you may already have in your kitchen or can find on a walk around Thanet – including kitchen scraps, spices and other natural ingredients. By working with materials that might otherwise be thrown away, you’ll explore low-waste ways of making art that are affordable, not harmful to the environment and easy to continue at home.

You’ll get to experiment with making different colours, and you can make a personal colour chart to help you remember what you discover. You can then use your handmade paints to make an artwork of your own. If starting from a blank page feels tricky, there will be optional pre-drawn outlines inspired by plants, animals, and natural patterns that you can colour in or adapt.

The workshop is designed to be low-pressure and supportive, with clear structure, gentle pacing and plenty of choice. The focus is on curiosity and play rather than technical skill or being ‘good’ at art. You don’t need any previous art experience – just an openness to experimenting!

All materials are provided, and there’s no need to bring anything unless you want to wear old clothes / an apron or bring your own notebook / sketchbook for personal notes.

Due to the nature of working with food stuffs, please let us know if you have any allergies.

  • 7-7.15pm – welcome and settling in
  • 7.15-7.30 – intro
  • 7.30-8.40 – workshop activity
  • 8.40-8.50 – tidy up
  • 8.50-9 – feedback forms

Facilitator Bio

Carole is a Margate-based Neurodivergent artist, facilitator and teacher whose creative practice spans printmaking, collage and textiles, as well as making and using naturally-made paints, inks and dyes. Her work is informed by nature, sustainability and heritage. She is particularly interested in making art accessible, playful and community-centred.

Over the past 16 years, Carole has facilitated creative learning in schools, museums and community spaces. She has led workshops on making natural dyes and paints, including at Kew Gardens, and run inclusive art sessions for groups such as Margate Pride Youth Group. Before moving to Margate she lived in Canterbury, where she founded Pride Art Canterbury, a pop-up studio and community gallery at Canterbury Pride, creating welcoming spaces for people to make and share art together.

Carole brings warmth, structure and lived experience of neurodivergence to her workshops, creating environments where participants feel safe to experiment, play and connect.

Neurodivergent Friends workshops are not for anyone seeking unpaid emotional labour from our community.

Additionally, they are not a place for you to carry out research, arrange consultations or solicit feedback or gather information for your own agenda.

Finally, they are not for anyone being paid to attend on behalf of an organisation.
